And another thing...

Over the last 20 years I have learned a lot, tried a lot and thought a lot. And here are my thoughts. 

I hope they encourage discussion, agreement and disagreement and more importantly a move towards New Zealand and Kiwis having good buildings.

It’s time we spoke about the elephant in the room.

The GIB shortage is not solely the fault of Winstone Wallboards. It is also a reflection of the problems associated with the way that Councils process consent, carry out inspections and generally carry out their building related role.

We need to understand the problems, make the necessary changes to ensure that New Zealand is never subject to a similar shortage again. We need the application of the regulatory framework to be transparent, fair, consistent, objective and one that incentivises robust information and compliant behaviour.

To achieve this we need MBIE to be an effective steward of the building regulatory framework.
